Toto Chiavetta - Sounds Between Colours EP
With his singular talent for constructing sound worlds with flashes of futurism, Innervisions alumnus Toto Chiavetta makes a welcome return to the label fold. Sound Between Colour EP showcases new and uncharted terrain of cinematic thriller landscapes and dramatic shifts of temperature and tone, all illustrated in technicolour.
Title track “Sounds Between Colours” begins with a mood of spectral suspense. An unresolved three-note loop evolves through building dramatic tension, while percussive accents ping and fall like natural elements. Boiling point is reached in the final quarter, with bright synth chords that add an unmistakable science fiction feel. “This Does Not Happen Where The Sun Rises” is an unsettling and darkly suggestive excerpt of sound artistry. A filtered solo beat is as muffled as a distant heart, forming the foundation for nightmarish distorted speech, warped clocks, metallic stabs and floating cymbals that all evoke a certain doom.
“Metrica” is marked by a thrumming beat and ticking timekeeping instruments that reflect the rigidity of its name. The song’s metronomic construction and hard-edged layers add a sharp clarity to each sound element. In an eerily quiet breakdown, vast waves of sweeping electronic sounds are chilling, before the deep tech soundscape roars back into full view. As a counterpoint to the precision, “Dedication To All The Mothers And Their Moons” is a perfect fusion of organic substance and rounded style. An affecting vocal sample introduces the guitar-influenced song which features plucked notes, strummed melodies, and a warm Mediterranean feel, as voice is woven deftly around the beat.
